About Us

Los Altos PREPARE and Los Altos Block Action Team (BAT) are sponsored by the Los Altos Community Foundation (LACF), an organization that has been building community for over 25 years. LACF promotes activities and facilities that give our community its favorable character and make it a desirable place to live and work for all.  For more information about LACF’s programs and philanthropic endeavors, please visit losaltoscf.org

In 2013 members of the community recognized that the residents of Los Altos could be better prepared for an emergency at the individual and neighborhood level. Since building community is one of the primary tenets of LACF, the vision of neighborhoods to work together as teams on both emergency-related and security issues LACF felt Los Altos PREPARE  and Los Altos Block Action Team (BAT) programs should launched.

While both programs are sponsored by LACF, they are an all-volunteer effort.  Over 40 residents have participated in the planning and concept development meetings and have been working together to establish the programs.  Sherie Dodsworth, former LACF Board co-chair, volunteered to take on the leadership position for these programs.

Los Altos PREPARE

The goal of Los Altos PREPARE is to enhance our community’s knowledge about how to prepare for and strengthen its ability to respond and recover from a major disaster.

It will accomplish these goals through:

  • Training of Block Action Team (BAT) Leaders about emergency preparedness, response and recover efforts that they should implement in their neighborhoods.
  • Establishing Emergency Information and Response Sites (EIRS), throughout the city to be used to report information to the City’s Emergency Operation Center (EOC).
  • Re-establish CERT (Community Emergency Response Training) which will enhance the skills and services our residents could provide to our community.
  • Encourage residents to attend the Personal Emergency Preparedness (PEP) course taught by Santa Clara County Fire District
  • Educate the community by sponsoring informative speakers and contributing articles to local publications.
  • Interfacing with City Officials and First Responders (Police & Fire) to enhance our community’s preparedness, response and recovery knowledge and abilities.

Block Action Team (BAT)

The goals of the Los Altos Block Action Team (BAT) program is to build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods and a better sense of community by providing tools, training and information to residents, allowing them to work together to enhance their neighborhoods.

It will accomplish these goals through:

  • Training of Block Action Team (BAT) Leaders about building community through social interaction of neighbors
  • Expose BAT Leaders to other programs sponsored by LACF, such as Center for Age Friendly Excellence, and Los Altos Values Youth which assist and enhance the lives of  seniors citizens and youth of our community.
  • Promote Neighborhood Watch and encourage BAT’s to sign up with the Los Altos Police Department.
  • Inspire sustainability efforts with the assistance of Green Town
